about

I wrote this song after reading the book "Oh Pioneers" by Willa Cather. It is the first book that was published by Cather in 1913 and describes the hardships of farming life in rural Nebraska and the dreams of an immigrant family from Sweden.
I was taken by the characters of Emile and Maria from the very beginning and the tragic spin their relationship takes in the end at the hands of Maria's jealous husband.

lyrics

Star Crossed Lovers

Well they walked into the dead of night
and put the fireflies and moon to bed.
He held her in his arms,
his shoulder cradled her head.
And underneath the big oak tree
he said, runaway with me.

For your husband's cold and cruel.
And he's never cared for you.
I've loved you since we were young.
working these fields in the sun.
And when she looked into his eyes
she saw the light of a Mexico sky.

The plains of Nebraska, 1913
Star crossed lovers
were never meant to be.

In the early morning hours
beyond the wheat fields and cherry trees.
Her husband came along
and rage brought him to his knees
For her lover death came quick
with a bullet through his heart.
And the next two aimed at her,
didn't miss their mark.
With heavy sobs and heaving chest,
she laid her head on her lovers breast.

The plains of Nebraska, 1913
Star crossed lovers
were never meant to be

When the last of the wild roses
open their hearts to die.
You can see two white doves
high in the Omaha night.
Flying free, oh so high,
headed south to a Mexico sky.

The plains of Nebraska, 1913
Star crossed lovers
were never meant to be.
Oh the plains of Nebraska, 1913
Star crossed lovers
were never meant to be,
never meant to be
